Chances are, you still have one or more tasks running in the background.

When Drive2Drive begins to copy data, it grabs an exclusive, restrictive, volume lock which causes all open file data to be committed to disk. It then releases the restrictive volume lock (retaining exclusive access to the drive however) and begins the copying process. If another process attempts to write to the drive being copied, then Drive2Drive detects this and starts all over (because Drive2Drive has no way of knowing what was changed on the disk).

The operating system can cause the problem if another process running in the background causes the swap file to grow or shrink. Make sure you do not have any utility programs running such as Norton Utilities, Norton Antivirus, RealAudio, etc. These utilities can cause the swap file to grow/shrink and/or cause a write to the disk in the background.

To see what tasks are running, bring up the Windows Task manager by depressing the Ctrl, Alt, and Del keys. Check to see if there are tasks other than Explorer running. If there are, try to kill them by selecting End Task. (Do not kill Explorer.)

Sometimes utilities running in the background will not show up in the Task Manger window. Try using MSCONFIG to temporarily disable all programs that are started automatically whenever Windows starts up:

  1. Click Start.
  2. Click Run.
  3. Type "msconfig" (w/o the quotes) in the Open edit box.
  4. Click OK (This should bring up the System Configuration Utility).
  5. On the General tab, uncheck the "Load startup group items" check box.
  6. Click the Startup tab.
  7. In the list box, uncheck all items except SystemTray and ScanRegistry. (Make note of the ones you unchecked so that you can restore them later).
  8. Click OK to accept the changes and close the System Configuration utility.
  9. You should be prompted to restart your system. If not, restart your system anyway by clicking Start, Shutdown, Restart.
